Description

The -ing form of the verb can also be a noun. For example, the title of this song is "Loving is easy". Here, the word "loving" is the subject of the sentence, just the same as "English is easy". Read the explanations.

Transcript

Can't explain how I'm feeling
So confused, never felt so alone
Tired of constantly wanting you near
Loving you, hating you
Here by the phone

One day we're up
We're doing fine
Along comes our lives
To mess with our minds
We're giving it all
Two fragile hearts
But each time reality tears us apart

Loving is easy
It's all of the rest that just gets in the way
Devotion don't feed me
Cos absence just leads lonely lovers to stray
Who says it's easy?
This journey called life's never liked me that much
Words only tease me
Sometimes love is not enough

Ships in the night
Kisses so cold
Tears I can't cry
Stuck in this hole
Two separate worlds
Minds filled with doubt
I'm just a girl
So what's this about?

Need some time to be alone
Tired of crying on the phone
Too much history
Shouting sorry's in the rain
Round in circles once again
It's too much for me

Loving is easy
It's all of the rest that just gets in the way
Devotion don't feed me
Cos absence just leads lonely lovers to stray
Who says it's easy?
This journey called life's never liked me that much
Words only tease me
Sometimes love is not enough

Loving is easy
It's all of the rest that just gets in the way
Devotion don't feed me
Cos absence just leads lonely lovers to stray
Who says it's easy?
This journey called life's never liked me that much
Words only tease me
Sometimes love is not enough

Español

En inglés, como en español, un verbo puede hacer también las funciones de un sustantivo. La diferencia es que en español utilizamos el infinitivo para hacer de sustantivo, y en inglés se utiliza la forma -ing:

- English is easy = El inglés es fácil
- Loving is easy = Amar es fácil
- Loving you is very easy = Amarte es muy sencillo
- Running too fast can be dangerous = Correr demasiado rápido puede ser peligroso.
- Parking here is forbidden = Aparcar aquí está prohibido.

Recuerda también que en inglés, usamos la forma -ing detrás de preposiciones y conjunciones (conectores):

- Thank you for helping me = gracias por esperarme
- We had to walk because driving there was impossible = tuvimos que andar porque conducir allí era imposible.

Explanations

The -ing form of the English verb is used to make continuous tenses:

I study English --> simple present
I am studying English --> present continuous

Tom lived in Rome --> simple past
Tom was living in Rome --> past continuous

We will work here --> simple future
We will be working here --> future continuous

But an -ing form can also be a noun and behave like a noun. In this case, it can go with or without an object.

SUBJECT
noun --> English is easy
-ing --> Loving is easy   /   Loving you is easy

OBJECT
noun --> I like books
-ing --> I like reading   /   I like reading books

COMPLEMENT
noun --> My favourite activity is tennis
-ing --> My favourite activity is reading    /   My favourite activity is reading books

PREPOSITIONAL COMPLEMENT
noun --> Thank you for the present
-ing --> Thank you for waiting    /    Thank you for helping me

WITH POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
noun --> I like your eyes
-ing --> I like your dancing    /    I like your looking at me

VERB AFTER PREPOSITIONS AND CONJUNCTIONS (connectors)
Remember this important rule: After prepositions and conjunctions we use the ing-form of the verb:

after preposition --> Thank you for waiting / He's thinking of going on holiday
after a conjunction --> We had to walk because driving there was impossible.
