Report mistakesOn this presentation video you can see some of the most basic expressions you need to talk on the phone (remember the preposition ON: "on the phone").
steps:
- The telephone rings
- you pick up the phone
- you guys speak on the phone
- you hang up the phone
PICK UP THE PHONE
When you pick up the phone you can say:
1- Hello?
2- John speaking. (= this is John)
ASK / GIVE IDENTIFICATION
We don't use the personal pronouns I or YOU. We use THIS, THAT or IT:
- Hello? Who's that?
- This is Peter, is that Julia?
- Yes, this is Julia. How are you Peter?
- Hello?
- Hi, it's Peter. Can I speak to John, please?
- Oh, hi Peter, it's John here.
- Oh, hello John. Do you want to come to my house now?
- No, sorry, I'm busy.
As you can see, we use THIS, THAT or IT only at first, when asking or giving identification. Then, we use I and YOU.
IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK WITH A DIFFERENT PERSON
1- Can I speak to Mary, please?
2- May I speak to Mary, please? (MAY is more polite than CAN)
3- Is Mary at home?
answer:
1- Yes, just a moment.
2- Yes, hold on ("hold on" = wait. This expression is very common when talking on the phone)
3- I'm sorry, she's out
4- Sorry, she's not here
LEAVING A MESSAGE
- Is Mary at home?
- Sorry, she's out.
- Oh, can I leave a message?
- Of course! / Sure.
- Can I speak to Mark?
- I'm sorry, he's not in. Can I take a message?
- Yes, please, tell him I phoned.
