INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDY

- Tom, what time is it? Do you know what time it is?
- Let's see. This is called a clock. This is a watch. This is called a watch. They both "tell" time. It's called "telling time". Do you know how to tell time? You will know how to tell time. They both tell time, the both give you the time of day.
What time is it? Do you know what time it is?
- Tom, ¿qué hora es? ¿Sabes qué hora es?
- Veamos. Esto se llama "reloj". Esto es un reloj (de pulsera). Esto se llama "reloj (de pulsera)". Los dos (ambos) "dan la hora". ¿Sabes cómo decir la hora? Aprenderás (sabrás) a decir la hora. Ambos (los dos) dicen la hora, los dos te dan la hora del día.
¿Qué hora es? ¿Sabes qué hora es?
Vemos aquí la diferencia entre reloj de pulsera (watch) y otros tipos de relojes (clock).
El verbo "tell" significa "decir", y en inglés los relojes "dicen" la hora (they tell the time).
BOTH= ambos, los dos.
Y otra cosa importante es... fíjate bien en el orden de la frase en estas dos preguntas:
- What time is it?
- Do you know what time it is?
- How are you? (= ¿qué tal estás)
- Can you tell me how you are? (= ¿me puedes decir qué tal estás)
Efectivamente, en el primer caso invertimos el orden normal sujeto-verbo (is it) y en el segundo caso no hacemos inversión (it is). Creo que ya hemos visto este fenómeno anteriormente. En inglés una pregunta siempre lleva inversión, una y sólo una. En la segunda frase tenemos un verbo antes, el "know", y ese verbo, que es realmente el que pregunta, está invertido (do you know – ponemos el auxiliar "do" antes del verbo "know", ya veremos este "do" más adelante), por lo tanto el segundo verbo (is) no lleva inversión (it is). Así que la regla es esta:
Cuando hay una pregunta, hay una inversión (y sólo una)
Si hay más de un verbo en la frase, invierte siempre el primero. En el inglés coloquial, hablando, a veces no se hace inversión, pero en el inglés normal o escrito siempre invertimos en las preguntas.
