INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDY
1- watch the video. 2- watch it again repeating after the teacher. 3- read the transcript (optional), see if you understand. 4- watch the video again once or more times until you learn the lesson well. 5- now try to use some objects to reproduce the dialogue (more or less) so you can practise what you just learnt.

There are (some) books on the table. There were books on the table.
Now, they're in my hands.
Now there are books on the table. Now they're gone, they are in my hands.
Hay un libro en la mesa. Había un libro en la mesa.
Hay (unos/algunos) libros en la mesa. Había algunos libros en la mesa.
Ahora están en mis manos (= ahora los tengo yo)
Ahora hay libros en la mesa. Ahora no están (literalmente= se han ido, son marchados), están en mis manos.
EL PASADO DEL TO BE (= ser/estar)
En el español estándar la forma HAY es invariable, vale para el singular y el plural (hay un libro, hay unos libros) y lo mismo ocurre en el pasado (había un libro, había unos libros). En inglés la forma HAY se forma con THERE y el verbo ser, por lo tanto sí tiene singular y plural:
- There is a book = hay un libro
- There are some books = hay unos libros
Y en pasado también:
- There was a book = había un libro
- There were some books = había unos libros
Así que ya sabes las formas del pasado del verbo ser:
Presente singular = is
Pasado singular = was
Presente plural = are
Pasado plural = were
