Cuando pedimos algo, podemos decir:
- I want a pen = quiero una estilográfica
- Give me a pen = dame una estilográfica
Pero esta es una forma brusca y autoritaria de pedir algo, no es agradable. La forma más corriente y educada de pedir algo en inglés es usando la construcción CAN I HAVE...?
- Can I have a pen, (please)? = Me puedes dar una estilográfica/boli, (por favor)?

Si usamos la fórmula CAN I...? (sin el "have"), entonces estamos pidiendo permiso:
- Can I open the window, please? = ¿puedo abrir la ventana, por favor? / ¿tengo permiso para abrir la ventana? / ¿me deja abrir la ventana?
- Can I go to the toilet? = ¿puedo ir al servicio/baño/excusado?

TRANSLATION
Can I have some water? = ¿me puedes dar (algo de) agua?
I'm so thirsty = ¡tengo tanta sed! (lit: estoy tan sediento)
I'm so hungry = ¡tengo tanta hambre! (lit: estoy tan hambriento)
I'm thirsty, I'm hungry = tengo sed, tengo hambre
I can drink anything = puedo beber cualquier cosa
I can eat anything = puedo comer cualquier cosa
chestnuts = castañas
pear juice = zumo/jugo de pera
Yeah = yes (sí)
Here you are = aquí tienes / toma
It's all free for you = es todo gratis para ti

CAN I HAVE...?

We use this construction to ask politely for something.
If you want a pen you can say:
- I want a pen huh
- Give me a pen huh
But that's not nice. It is nicer and polite to say:
- Can I have a pen, please? pleased

We use the construction CAN I...? (without "have") to ask for permission:
- Can I open the window, please?
- Can I go to the toilet?
