Description

Dust in The Wind is the 7th song on the album "point of Know return" released album performed and recorded by the Kansas progressive rock band in 1977.
Reached  6 lists the Billboard Hot 100 popular place in the week of 22 April 1978 being this the only single Kansas who has reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written by Kerry Livgren, and was one of the first acoustic band; its gentle melody and melancholic letter ostensibly differs from other successes of the band as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "The Wall". The interlude song contains a distinctive and memorable melody only interpreted by Robby Steinhardt violin.
Is made with a deep spiritual significance and is currently played in many funerals.

I close my eyes

only for a moment and the moments gone

all my dreams

pass before my eyes a curiosity

Dust in the wind

all they are is dust in the wind

same old song

just a drop of water in an endless sea

All we do

crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

dust in the wind

all we are is dust in the wind

Now dont hang on

nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky

Now dont hang on

nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky

It slips away. And all your money
won't another minute buy.

Meaning

The subject makes us remember that we are nothing compared to the entire universe. It may sound depressing, especially with a sad melody like this, but its purpose is to try and make us aware that we need to live and better appreciate the present because it's all we have. This is just a modern version of the medieval "memento mori" topic.

this song is a classic one of which many versions have become, like the one of Sara Brightman, that it was made 20 years late
