Generation gap       Accent: e Dictionary    Sound BrE    Explanations

A joke to laugh... and think.

Sound
A self-important teenager was on a crowded bus trying to explain an old man why it was impossible for his generation to understand the youth.

"You old people will never understand our generation. You grew up in a different world, almost primitive." He was talking so loudly that people around him began to listen.

The old man said nothing. The student continued "Young people today grew up with TV, jet planes, space travel, men walking on the moon.
SoundWe have nuclear energy, cell phones, computers, internet and many more things than you ever had."

The old man was silent for a moment and then said "You're right son. We didn't have all those things when we were young...so we invented them. Now what are YOU idiots going to do for the next generation?"

The applause from all the people listening was amazing.

Explanations

GAP= An empty space between two things, especially when it's separating them. Old and young people are very different and it's difficult for them to understand each other, so we call "generation gap" to that psychological separation between them.
SELF-IMPORTANT= Conceited. A person who thinks they are more important than the rest of the people.
TEENAGER= A person from 13 to 19 years old (more or less). All those numbers end in -teen, so a person with that age is called "teenager" or simply "teen".
CROWDED= Full of people.
THE YOUTH= /ju:θ/ young people.
PRIMITIVE= Primitive societies existed before civilization arrived. There are still some primitive people in the Amazon, African jungle and some Oceanic islands.
LOUDLY= /ldlɪ/ If you talk loudly you speak in a high voice.
CELL PHONES (AmE)= Mobile phones (BrE). A portable phone you can fit into your pocket.
SON= /sʌn/ Old people often address young boys as "son", even if they're no family or they don't know each other.
IDIOTS= An idiot is a stupid person (an insult).
APPLAUSE= /əplɔ:z/ a round of claps (to show approval).
AMAZING= Incredible, great, fantastic.

Although it is a joke but it has a good lesson for the outspoken youth.I really like such kind of amusement.
