Description

An inspiring poem by Victor Hugo about the things you need in your life.
Try to understand the message but don't worry too much about grammar (poetry is often old-fashioned or breaks the rules). Notice the use of MAY to express a desire, not a fact (just like the subjunctive in many European languages) and the use of infinitive with TO to form the subject of a sentence (in modern English we use the -ING form).

1- Old Fashioned English= "to err is human, to forgive divine" (subject: "to err" / "to forgive")
2- Modern English= "making new friends is fantastic" (subject: "making")

Also notice the difference between WISH followed by a past tense and WISH followed by the subjunctive auxiliary MAY or infinitive with TO :
1- "I wish you had friends" (but you haven't)
2- "I wish you may have friends" / "I wish you to have friends" (= I hope you will have friends, I want you to have friends)
