The history of Halloween could be traced back a few thousand years to an ancient Celtic holiday in medieval Ireland called Samhain. Religion took over in the seventh century when the Pope, in an effort to undermine Pagan beliefs, co-opted Samhain with All Saints Day. Trick or treat owes a fantastic deal of its substance to the Pagans and the Pope, not to mention the advertising campaigns of United States candy manufacturers.
