If your baby’s choking you may notice that they are unable to cry or breathe, so what we’re gonna do is first of all have a little look in their mouth.

As we take a little look in the mouth, if there’s anything that we can see that we can pick out, we might try to do that. What we’re not gonna do however, is start sticking our fingers in there, because the object, we could push further down the throat.

What we need to do now is to administer some back blows. So first of all we need to place the baby down our thigh, making sure that we support the head and the neck.

Next we’re going to administer blows directly between the shoulder blades using the heel of our hand, up to five of them. After each one, making sure that whatever it is hasn’t come out.

If that hasn’t worked, we now need to move on to some chest thrusts. So we’re gonna turn the baby over, making sure that once again, their head and their neck is supported. Using your two fingers, directly in line with the armpit in the centre of the chest, you’re going to administer up to five chest thrusts. That’s pushing inwards and upwards to about one third of the depth.

Alternate between the chest thrusts and the back blows. If this doesn’t work, repeat this for three cycles, make sure an ambulance is on the way.

If the baby goes unconscious at any time, you’ll have to do CPR. So remember, if a baby’s choking:

1- check the mouth
2- slap it out
3- squeeze it out.

And that’s how we treat a choking baby.
