The song is talking about a relationship coming to an end; the heart-ripping pain of breaking off.

Adele told Q magazine that the title came to her, "in the middle of the night when I got up for a wee…". Not very romantic, but that's life :)

I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they're strong
But my knees were far too weak,
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But there's a side to you
That I never knew
, never knew.
All the things you'd say
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.

But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

When I lay with you
I could stay there
Close my eyes
Feel you here forever
You and me together
Nothing is better

'Cause there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew,
All the things you'd say,
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.

But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
Where it felt something die
'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!

Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That heart you caught must be waiting for ya
Even now when we're already over
I can't help myself from looking for ya.

I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
Where it felt something die
'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time, ohhhh!

Oh noooo
Let it burn, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn

ROSE= (rise-rose-risen) went up.

CLAIM IT= If you claim something, you say it is yours and you want to have it for you.

I WAS OVER= I was finished (I felt that my life had come to an end)

FAR TOO WEAK= We use FAR to emphasize TOO (“far too week” or “much too weak” is weaker that simply “too weak”)

THERE’S A SIDE TO YOU THAT I NEVER KNEW= There is a part of you that was always a mystery for me.

YOU’D SAY= You would say =  you used to say, you often said, you usually said.
We use WOULD or USED TO to talk about a habit in the past (“used to” emphasizes a contrast between present and past):
- I used to play by this river (but not now anymore)
- When I was a child, I would come here every day (this "would" is not conditional).

THEY WERE NEVER TRUE= They were always a lie.

GAMES= If you play games, you deceive people, you behave in a certain way for a hidden reason, because you want to manipulate people to get something.

YOU WOULD ALWAYS WIN= Another use of WOULD to talk about a common habit in the past (= You usually won).

I SET FIRE TO THE RAIN= To set fire to something is to make it burn. Of course you can’t set the rain on fire, but this is a metaphor.  She wanted so much to destroy the rain that she made the impossible: she set the rain on fire. But why? “Cause I heard it screaming out your name”, pure jealousy. Another interpretation is that she did it unintentionally. She simply felt so passionate and infuriated about his treason that her own fire was so intense as to set even the water on fire.

POUR= /pɔ:*/ If rain pours, a lot of rain falls down from the sky.
- It’s pouring = it’s raining a real lot, very heavily (= old fashioned: it’s raining cats and dogs)

SCREAMING OUT= To scream something out is to pronounce it shouting it very loud, in a scream.

LAY= (lie-lay-lain) To lie is to be extended on a horizontal surface.

I KNEW THAT THAT WAS THE LAST TIME= The first THAT ət/ is a connector, a conjunction and the second æt/ is a determiner (the opposite of THIS). Notice that the spelling is the same but the pronunciation is different:  ət/ vs /ðæt/.

I WAKE UP BY THE DOOR= When I wake up, I am standing (or lying) next to the door (as if waiting for you to come). Why? Because the heart that you caught (my heart), the heart that you claimed for you (in the beginning of the song) “must be waiting for you”, because it is yours and can’t live without you. Since she uses the habitual present (I wake up), that means that this happens very often, as a habit.

YA= (coll.) /jə/ You.

WE’RE ALREADY OVER= To be over is to be finished. If we’re over, we have broken up, our relationship has ended.

I CAN’T HELP MYSELF FROM LOOKING FOR YOU= I can’t help looking for you.
If you can’t help doing something, it is impossible for you not to do it.

This song is about the intense pain of breaking off a relationship with someone who means so much but is two-sided and not good to be with. All that rage and desperation that she feels when breaking up with him is condensed in the powerful sentence of the title: "I set fire to the rain". My love, my passion, my pain is so intense, that it can even make the water burn. The video suggests that he was also having an affair with another man. Since this song is autobiographic, we don't know if that's what really happened to her, but maybe.

Ask about her song, Adele said that it was about "burning the pain and getting rid of it and demolishing it...and it's sort of like a liberating song because you know when you break up and the other person who you've left or who has left you knows how much you love them and they try and make your life hell and make it so that you can never get over them by constantly being in touch...it's kind of like that, and it's about taking it into your own hands and just saying, go away."

Adele told MTV News in an interview to plug the album's release: "It broke my heart when I wrote this record, so the fact that people are taking it to their hearts is like the best way to recover. 'Cause I'm still not fully recovered. It's going to take me 10 years to recover, I think, from the way I feel about my last relationship. It was the biggest deal in my entire life to date. He made me totally hungry. He was older, he was successful in his own right, whereas my boyfriends before were my age and not really doing much. And he got me interested in film and literature and food and wine and traveling and politics and history, and those were things I was never, ever interested in. I was interested in going clubbing and getting drunk."
