Sweetest Smile (Black)

One of Black greatest hits, back in the 80's.

I think my heart must be made of clay,
'cause everyone said it would be broken some day.
And now I've come to that fateful day,
So I sit on the floor
With my head in my hands.

And don't tell me how to make it pay,
I write a new song every day.
I just wish I was made of wood,
I might not feel pain,
Even if I should, even if I should,

If I should.

The sweetest smile that ever did
Melt the pats in the butter dish,
And if you could have believed in me,
I swear to God
I'd have made damn sure.

Our hearts were warm, and glad with wine.
I'd keep the doors locked all the time.
I just wish I was made of wood,
You might not seem glad,
Even if you should, even if you should,

If you should,

If you should,

If you should,

I think my heart must be made of clay,
'cause everyone said it would be broken some day.
Seems like I have come to that fateful day,
So I sit on the floor
With my head in my hands,
With my head in my hands.

If I should,
If I should,
If I should,

If I should...

CLAY= Cooked mud which is very breakable if you drop it (see picture)

CAUSE= (coll.) Because.

FATEFUL= The result of destiny; terrible and unavoidable.

HOW TO MAKE IT PAY= How to get some kind of benefit from it.

WOOD= The material trees are made of (see picture)

PAIN= Suffering.

MELT= If something solid melts, it becomes liquid.

PATS= Little pats of butter are little portions of butter (see picture)

DISH= Plate.

I SWEAR TO GOD= A very strong phrase announcing that what we are going to say is absolutely true (and may God punish us if we lie).

DAMN SURE= Very very sure.

GLAD= Cheerful, happy. If you are "glad with wine", you feel happy because you have drunk wine.

LOCKED= Closed using a key.
Metaphorically, if you “lock the doors” you don’t want to love anybody else (usually because you are traumatized from a past experience).

YOU MIGHT NOT SEEM GLAD= Perhaps you would look happy (MAY/MIGHT can be used to express probability).

EVEN IF= Although; but.

In this song, Black tries to express his feelings after his divorce. Sad, gloomy and beautiful song.
