One Direction is specializing in creating amazing videos, often with incredible special effects. This video sure is proof of that with a magical use of morphing. Ever dreamed of having all the members of the band in one single man? Well, this is your lucky day then.

You & I is the fifth song on One Direction’s third album Midnight Memories.

I figured it out
I figured it out from black and white
Seconds and hours
Maybe they had to take some time
I know how it goes
I know how it goes from wrong and right
Silence and sound
Did they ever hold each other tight like us
Did they ever fight like us

You and I
We don't wanna be like them
We can make it till the end
Nothing can come between you and I
Not even the gods above can separate the two of us
No nothing can come between you and I
Oh, you and I

I figured it out
Saw the mistakes of up and down
Meet in the middle
There's always room for common ground
I see what it's like
I see what it's like for day and night
Never together
Cause they see things in a different light like us
Did they ever try like us?

You and I
We don't wanna be like them
We can make it till the end
Nothing can come between you and I
Not even the gods above can separate the two of us

'Cause You and I
We don't wanna be like them
We can make it till the end
Nothing can come between you and I
Not even the gods above can separate the two of us
No nothing can come between you and I
Oh, you and I
You and I
We could make it if we try
You and I, you and I

FIGURE IT OUT= Understand.

HOLD EACH OTHER TIGHT= To hold is to embrace, to put your arms around a person to show affection. To hold tight is to do it strongly. “Each other” shows a reciprocal action, when A does to B and B to A.

LIKE US= The same as us.
This LIKE is not the verb, it is a preposition of comparison.

YOU AND I= When it is the subject of the sentence, we must say "you and I":
- You and I need help
But when it is not followed by a verb, it is more common to use "you and me" even when it is a subject:
- Who is coming?
- You and me, and maybe John
(we could also say "you and I" here)
- Well, we have bicycles for you and me, but we need another one for John.
In this song, they use "you and I" as a subject meaning "we", but then they use "we" again, so they are actually using two subjects in some sentences to emphasize the idea that "you and I" is not just two different people, but a "we":
- You and I, we don't wanna be like them = You and I don't wanna be like them

WANNA= (coll.) Want to.

WE CAN MAKE IT= We can succeed, we can manage to have a good relationship.

ABOVE= /əbʌv/ Up in the sky.
The preposition ABOVE is used to talk about something which is in a higher position but without contact (The stars are shining above the forest). It can also used as an adverb to express situation (The stars are shining above).

NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN YOU AND I= Nothing can separate us.

ROOM= Space; (metaphorically) possibility.

COMMON GROUND= A situation or state which is acceptable for both sides. If A and B want different things, a common ground is something which can be ok for both A and B, so they both feel comfortable with it. If A and B are very different, common ground is what they have in common, forgetting about what makes them different.

WHAT IT’S LIKE= “I see what it’s like for day and night never together” means that I can understand how day and night feel about being always separated, because something similar may happen to us if we let it happen (because we are also as different as day and night).

THEY SEE THINGS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT= They have different opinions; they see life in different ways.

The song is folk pop song with enchanting and romantic lyrics about a love where you really want it to work. The lyrics take many sets of opposites and compare them to the relationship between a man and a woman. They emphasize on the fact that people have to fight for what’s important to them and if two people truly love each other they will find a way to be together no matter the differences between them.

Another thing the song is trying to say that if two people don’t work on their relationship they might eventually become opposites and they won’t be able to be together anymore because of the distance between them — physical or emotional. But he doesn’t want this to happen to their relationship so he looks at other relationship and sees how they fell apart and tries to learn from their mistakes. In this song he’s trying to convince her that they aren’t like the other couples who broke up because their relationship is different and they are really putting their hearts into it.
